A wildlife census is a systematic survey used to estimate the size, distribution, and composition of a wildlife population within a defined area. In the case of wild deer, a census aims to provide an accurate assessment of deer numbers while recording important information such as species, sex, age class, location, and group size.
Traditionally, deer censuses have been conducted from the ground using binoculars, spotting scopes, and, more recently, handheld thermal imaging devices. This approach requires multiple surveyors positioned across a site, recording the time, location, species, and sex of each observed herd. For example, a sighting may be recorded as 10 females and 2 males within a particular area.
While effective in some situations, ground-based censuses are labour-intensive, time-consuming, and require significant human resources to achieve comprehensive coverage, particularly across large landscapes.
For many years, aerial surveys using helicopters have also been employed, particularly in large, open environments such as those found in the Scottish Highlands. Although helicopter surveys can cover vast areas quickly, they are expensive to operate and can place considerable stress on resident deer populations due to noise and disturbance. Furthermore, helicopter surveys are often impractical or ineffective in the woodland, fragmented, and semi-urban landscapes that characterise much of the United Kingdom.
Advances in drone technology have transformed the way wildlife censuses are conducted. Equipped with high-resolution thermal imaging and optical cameras, modern drones can detect deer over large areas with exceptional accuracy while causing minimal disturbance.
Thermal sensors identify the heat signatures emitted by animals, allowing deer to be located even in low-light conditions or areas of dense vegetation. Simultaneously, high-definition optical cameras enable species identification at distances of up to 2 kilometres and, under suitable conditions, sex identification at distances approaching 1 kilometre.
A key advantage of drone-based surveys is the ability to accurately record and map observations. Each deer or herd can be assigned a georeferenced location, allowing surveyors to track movements across the survey area and significantly reduce the risk of double-counting animals as they move between survey sectors.

This video was captured during a recent nocturnal survey of fallow deer on one of our client's estates. Using advanced colour night-vision technology, we accurately identified the sex and age class of individual deer, providing a detailed population assessment.
The survey revealed an exceptionally high recruitment rate, with around 90% of adult females accompanied by fawns, including several with twins. This level of detail supports informed, evidence-based deer management.
